Background

Our foundation is driven by a mission to create positive change in the healthcare of our local community.
Here is the background story of our journey:

Answering the Call
From Charitable Aspirations to Impactful Healthcare Solutions

In the early years of the millennium, my wife Alison Kariuki and I, Kairu Mbuthia , had a strong desire to engage in charitable work. While exploring various avenues, we acquired land near the Kenya-Tanzania border in Namanga. During our visits to the area, we witnessed the healthcare challenges faced by the local community. It was at that moment we realized that our calling was in healthcare. Motivated by this realization, we acquired additional land in preparation for our mission.

The Naomi Kairu Foundation
Honoring Our Mother's Memory Through Accessible and Sustainable Healthcare

In 2010, we established the Naomi Kairu Foundation as a nonprofit charitable organization, named in memory of our late mother, Naomi Njeri Kairu. We were joined in this noble cause by our brother and co-director, Mathew Gathua.
Our journey began with the goal of establishing a clinic that would become the most reliable and affordable healthcare facility between Athi River and Arusha. We constructed a semi-permanent structure and were ready to open. However, we soon realized the importance of running water for a well-functioning healthcare facility. Thus, the need to drill a borehole became apparent.

Overcoming Challenges
From Setbacks to Solutions: Navigating Obstacles in Pursuit of Accessible Water Supply

After years of saving, we managed to secure the necessary funds for drilling. We hired a hydrologist to locate the best possible water source on our property. Unfortunately, the search yielded no positive results, and we were informed that our land had no potential for water. This setback led us to approach our neighbors for permission to explore suitable borehole locations on their properties. Most declined, but one kind neighbor agreed, although their land was not directly adjacent to ours. Eventually, we found a suitable point for drilling, which was located 3 kilometers away from our land. With promising water yields, our next challenge was to pipe the water to the proposed clinic/hospital site.

Empowering Healthcare with Sustainable Solutions
From Solar Pumping Systems to Licensing Triumphs: Transforming Challenges into Progress

Through further fundraising efforts, we managed to install a solar pumping system to pump the water to the clinic site. However, another obstacle surfaced when we applied for licensing. We were informed that our semi-permanent structure and lack of power prevented us from obtaining the necessary licenses. This setback was disheartening, especially considering that proper storage conditions were essential for certain medications, including vaccines. Despite this setback, in 2019, we successfully brought power to the site, and in 2020, we constructed a permanent structure to house the pharmacy and lab.

The Naomi Kairu Clinic's Journey Towards Community Transformation
Accessible Healthcare, Compassionate Service, Lasting Impact

With these significant milestones achieved, we proudly opened the doors of the Naomi Kairu Clinic on March 1, 2021. Our foundation remains committed to improving healthcare access and making a positive impact on the lives of our local community.
Since March 1st, 2021, the Foundation has been fulfilling its mission through the establishment of a health clinic and pharmacy on a 55-acre plot generously donated for this purpose. This clinic is dedicated to providing top-notch primary healthcare services that are easily accessible to all individuals within our community. Our primary objective is to bring about positive transformations in local healthcare by delivering compassionate and high-quality treatment. We prioritize the well-being of those we serve by actively engaging in educational initiatives, outreach programs, and other innovative services. The Foundation operates as a charitable organization under the guidance of a capable board.

Commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 3
